Director is most often used to create CDROM presentations and applications. Director has web capabillities and works very well in many instances where use of a dynamic applications is needed however it does not hold the ability to draw detailed animations that Flash is most noted for. The advantages of Director for CDROM development are in it's handling of Audio and Video, its dedicated support network and documented history on the development scene.

Authorware is often used to create CDROM presentations but is typically use more often for educational and training purposes. Authorware is noted for it's ease of use and straightforward interface which has made it popular in educational and office circles. It has few advantages over Director though and many developers stear clear of Authorware due to its seemingly stiff development environment and it's icon based interface. All three applications are excellent for creating CDROMs but each has its specialty which makes it more suited for certain projects and developers
